As a reminder for employers in Virginia, the state has enacted changes to unemployment compensation benefits through legislation signed into law in 2025. These changes will take effect beginning January 1, 2026, for claims filed on or after that date.
Main Updates:
- Weekly Benefit Increase:
- Eligible individuals will receive an additional $52 per week in unemployment compensation.
- Updated benefit amounts are reflected in the revised Benefit Table.
- Annual Adjustment Study: The Commission on Unemployment Compensation, in partnership with the Virginia Employment Commission, will study the feasibility of annual adjustments to weekly benefit amounts based on the average weekly wage.
- Employer Impact: While no immediate action is required, employers should be aware that increased benefits may lead to higher unemployment insurance taxes in the future.
Please consult the Printed Bill for the Benefit Table.
